Updating shipbuilding through additive manufacturing.

Corporate venture building: Keeping the essence of sailing while bridging the gap with tomorrow’s shipyards.
The challenge

Overview.

Additive manufacturing is the process of shaping an object by precisely adding layers of material to one another, as opposed to the traditional process of removing material from a block through milling, machining or carving. It has proven to be a profitable process when producing small badges that require long lead-times.

A player in the metal-mechanic industry wanted to diversify within the additive manufacturing sector. They approached us looking for a trustworthy partner, and we helped them define the industry and the stakes for their new entrepreneurial efforts.

Our starting point:

The costliest and most important step in a project like this one is defining a customer to pitch additive manufacturing to.
Our client has industry connections and a high tolerance for risk.
The demand for additive manufacturing has been increasing, but suppliers are adamant about entering the market due to regulations and certifications constrictions.
Our end goal:

Developing a new venture concept that addresses the shipbuilding market’s needs in an integral and cohesive manner.

In collaboration with an industry leader, we created a venture concept in the additive manufacturing sector to more effectively design, fabricate, repair, as well as manage logistics, shipment, digital designs and IP protection.

OUR process

Insights and Discovery.

Validating business concepts before launching ventures is key when implementing our venture building methodology.

In this case, we set a different breakdown of learning goals and tools to extract insights and define solutions for each phase of the project. We then tested the resulting concepts before determining one main road to follow.

OUR process

Picking a concept.

We compared three different opportunities through the lens of the Byld Metric, a tool we created to compare business opportunities combining corporate venture builders’, investors’, and entrepreneurs’ perspectives. We then combined the two winning concepts, and, thus, Teseo was born.

This new concept focuses on the four main aspects identified: design, to adapt and optimize vessels, fabrication and repair, to manufacture with the best materials and technology, logistics and shipment, to offer more effective ways to deliver, and digital design and IP protection, to manage designs in real-time.

The result

Teseo, the shipyard’s ally to navigate changes.

Teseo is a venture specialized in fabricating and repairing boat parts in functional polymer and metal. Information on these parts is stored and analyzed, developing industry-specific models to help improve and guide today’s and tomorrow’s designs.
Its value proposition:
Tailor made
Designs and materials adapted to each vessel’s needs.
From months to weeks
Leverage the agility of digital design. Delivering final parts in just a few days reduces uncertainty and keeps vessels operational.
Ongoing service
Our service does not end with the part delivery. Parts are continuously analyzed for improvement, thus making ship operations more efficient.
Convenient quoting
Having the digital parts, a strong supplier network, and controlling the additive process and, it can quote parts on the same day and reduce waiting times.
Your pieces will remain yours
Intellectual protection is at the base of its service. There will be no replication or modifications of parts without control or supervision–the management SW facilitates the tracing of each activity of the design proccess.
